A Pittsburgh Home Addition That Honors the Past While Building for Modern Luxury

There is something incredibly special about a home that carries its history forward instead of leaving it behind. For this new build home near Pittsburgh, PA, the homeowners wanted to create a space that honored the original 1985 house that once stood on the property. Something that felt intentional and polished, without classing with the new construction.
TJ Bush Enterprises had the pleasure of creating a custom cabin addition that does exactly that. This home addition was designed to give a thoughtful nod to the property’s original structure, preserving the warmth, texture, and character of the former home while connecting seamlessly to the modern luxury of the new build.

A Cabin Addition Inspired by the Original 1985 Home
One of the most important goals of this project was to carry forward the spirit of the original home. Rather than replacing every trace of what came before, the design intentionally pulled from the cabin-style details that made the original structure memorable.
The rich horizontal log-style walls immediately create a sense of warmth and history. Their dark wood tones, organic lines, and hand-hewn texture bring depth to the space, giving the room a cozy cabin feel without making it feel outdated. Paired with clean trim, large windows, updated flooring, and modern furnishings, the space strikes a beautiful balance between rustic character and refined comfort.
This is where the project becomes more than a standard home addition in Pittsburgh, PA. It becomes a continuation of the home’s story.
Preserving the Original Stone Fireplace
At the heart of the cabin addition is the original stone fireplace, a feature that deserved to remain a focal point. In the before photos, the fireplace already carried a strong sense of charm with its substantial stonework, black mantel, and traditional hearth. Rather than removing it, the updated design gave it room to shine in a completely new way.

Now, the fireplace anchors the living space with a more elevated presence. The natural stone surround still brings texture and old-home character, while the updated brick chimney, open ceiling height, wood beams, and surrounding log walls make the entire feature feel intentional and grand.
It is the kind of before-and-after transformation that proves preservation and luxury can absolutely live in the same room.

A Modern Breezeway With Statement Tilework
Connecting the cabin-inspired addition to the newer portion of the home is a modern breezeway that feels like a design moment all on its own. This space adds contrast in the best way, using clean architectural lines, oversized windows, bright natural light, and bold floor tile to bridge the old and new parts of the home.

The tilework is especially eye-catching. The breezeway floor features a geometric gray pattern with a dimensional star or cube-like effect, giving the space a custom, almost Pinterest-worthy finish. The pattern adds movement without overpowering the room, and the soft gray palette keeps it grounded enough to work with the warm wood tones and black window frames.

Where Rustic Character Meets Modern Architecture
One of the most beautiful things about this project is the way old and new materials speak to each other. The cabin addition includes the visual warmth of the original home, but the surrounding architecture brings in a sharper, more contemporary edge.
The black-framed windows add contrast against the natural wood tones. The vaulted wood ceiling creates height and warmth. The updated trim keeps the design clean. The modern breezeway introduces light, pattern, and a sense of openness. From the exterior, the original-style cabin section sits beside the bright board-and-batten new build, creating a layered look that feels collected over time rather than forced into one single style.
That balance was the heart of the project. The homeowners wanted to keep meaningful elements from the original home without compromising the modern luxury of their new build, and every detail works toward that goal.
