1927 Home Addition and Kitchen Remodel Designed to Feel Like It Was Always There

After decades of living in their home, this Wexford, PA couple decided it was finally time to treat themselves to the kitchen and living space they always dreamed of. Being owners of a house built in 1927, the goal was never to make everything feel brand new. They wanted a kitchen that felt fresh, functional, and elevated, while still honoring the charm and personality of the original home.
This home addition and kitchen remodel became a beautiful example of what happens when modern updates are designed with respect for the structure already in place. The finished space feels warm, personal, and collected, like it has always belonged to the home.

A Kitchen Remodel That Respects the Home’s History
Older homes have a way of telling their own story. The trim, the layout, the windows, the little built-in details... they all create a rhythm that can be hard to recreate. So for this home, the kitchen remodel needed to bring in modern comfort without stripping away that original character.

After working with our design team, the new kitchen was set to feel clean and current, but not stark. The rich, deep green tone of the cabinetry that feels grounded and classic, adding color without overpowering the room. It is bold enough to make a statement, but traditional enough to feel at home in a nearly century-old house.

Paired with warm wood floors, brass hardware, dark-veined countertops, and white tile, the space feels polished and lived-in. It is the kind of kitchen that works beautifully for everyday use, but still feels special every time you walk into it.

Statement Island with Bold Lighting
Lighting can completely change the feel of a remodel, and these fixtures do more than simply brighten the island. They help define the kitchen as a gathering space. Whether the homeowners are prepping dinner, enjoying coffee, hosting family, or settling into the everyday rhythm of home, the island now feels like a natural place to gather.
Above the large island, perfect for hosting, are oversized dome light fixtures immediately draw the eye. Their warm metallic finish adds softness and depth, while their larger scale helps anchor the kitchen as the heart of the home. Not to mention the hammered texture which adds dimension against the smooth surfaces.

Built-In Nooks That Carry Through the Home
One of the most charming details throughout this home is the use of built-in nooks. These thoughtful spaces help the renovation feel connected to the original 1927 architecture rather than added on after the fact.
The kitchen includes built-in moments that add function and charm, from a tucked-in storage area to a small counter nook that feels original. These details make the home feel layered and personal. They also echo the kind of craftsmanship often found in older homes, where storage and character were built directly into the frame.
Instead of feeling like a modern kitchen dropped into an older house, we strived for a remodel that feels like a natural continuation of the home’s original design.

A Home Addition That Created the Perfect Seating Area
Beyond the kitchen, the addition created a bright and welcoming seating area filled with natural light. This space gives the homeowners a beautiful spot to relax, gather, and enjoy the view into the rest of the home.
We loved bringing in pops of color and texture through the furniture and textiles. These chairs by Anthrolopogie were a major wow factor with bright colors and nature-inspired embroidery. The dark green in the leaves complimented the green cabinets along with the warmth of the pillows to the brass finishings.
One of the most memorable details is the arched opening above the space, where the second floor overlooks the addition below. It adds architectural interest while helping the new area feel tied into the original layout. Rather than closing the addition off, this opening creates connection between the upper and lower levels.

It is a subtle but smart design choice. The addition feels open and airy, but still cozy. New, but not disconnected. Refreshed, but not out of character.

A New Patio That Looks Like It Belongs
Outside the addition, a new patio was built to extend the living space even further. Much like the interior, the exterior was designed to feel as though it had always been part of the home.
The patio sits comfortably against the house, with materials and proportions that complement the original architecture. The covered area, warm exterior tones, brick details, and cozy seating all make the outdoor space feel established rather than newly tacked on.
It creates a natural place to enjoy slow mornings, family visits, or quiet evenings outdoors. Most importantly, it continues the same story as the interior renovation: updated living, thoughtfully blended with classic charm.
