After years of planning, these homeowners knew they wanted a bigger kitchen, but were not sure how to enlarge the space without compromising the existing character of the 1927 Ben Avon house.

The addition to the rear of the house expands the kitchen and adds small seating areas both indoors and outdoors. Large windows and a patio door bring in an abundance of natural light. The kitchen is also now accessible from an additional entry point. 

At the top of the interior stairs was a window which would be covered by the addition. This window area was left open with a railing added, which adds a great design feature on the kitchen side. At the kitchen sink, the placement of the new window makes the countertop part of the windowsill. The unique cabinet color lends itself to this modern functional kitchen with old world charm, blending well with the original 1927 Ben Avon house. 

The attached covered patio is part of the expansion. It adds a new, cozy outdoor seating area which is one of the owners’ favorite parts. The overall size and design of the addition does not overwhelm the original house, and the interior and exterior finish materials make the addition look as if it was part of the original house. The existing house has aluminum siding. For the addition’s exterior, we used Hardi siding and painted it to match the aluminum. The result? You can’t tell where the aluminum ends and Hardi begins.
